Diana, a new musical chronicling the life and legacy of Princess Diana, will head to Broadway next year. The biographical show will begin previews at the Longacre Theatre on March 2, 2020 and have its official premiere on March 31.
The musical’s Broadway premiere comes one year after it debuted at the La Jolla Playhouse, where it folded in April. Kinky Boots actress Jeanna de Waal originated the role as the iconic royal with support from Roe Hartrampf as Prince Charles, Erin Davie as Camilla Parker Bowles and Judy Kaye as Queen Elizabeth II – all of whom will reprise their roles on the Great White Way.
“Diana is the electrifying new musical about a woman who chose to be fearless, and as a result became timeless,” per the show’s website. “Leading fiercely with her heart, Princess Diana stood up for her family, her country and herself. She defied expectations, she rocked the royals and she created a legacy that will endure forever.”
On the creative end of the production is a team of theatrical titans with impressive resumes. Diana was written by Tony-winning composers Joe DiPietro and David Bryan. Tony winner Christopher Ashley (direction), Kelly Devine (choreography), William Ivey Long (costume design) and David Zinn (set design) also contribute their talents.
Theater-goers will be familiar with the musical’s premise before the curtain first opens. The show highlights some of the late Princesses most celebrated moments, including her 1981 wedding to Prince Charles, fashion sense, and the dedicated charity work that made her “The People’s Princess.” Of course, tragic details surrounding Diana’s life also come into play. Woven into the story is the constant press intrusion she faced, scrutiny within the royal family, the breakdown of her marriage and her untimely death in 1997.
Before Diana invades the Longacre Theatre next spring, it will play host to a limited engagement of The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical. It previously housed The Prom, which folded earlier this month after some 300 performances.
