Britney Spears Announces Indefinite Hiatus, Cancels Vegas Residency

Britney Spears is taking time off from her career to focus on family amid her father’s grave health concerns. The singer announced her abrupt hiatus with fans, adding that she will not go forth with her Domination residency show as planned.

Spears dropped a bombshell when she revealed that her father, Jamie Spears, had been hospitalized a few months ago for a spontaneous colon rupture which put him near death. While he is recuperating, the pop star is putting all her professional commitments on hold for the foreseeable future.

“I don’t even know where to start with this, because this is so tough for me to say. I will not be performing my new show Domination,” Spears shared in an Instagram caption. “I’ve been looking forward to this show and seeing all of you this year so doing this breaks my heart. However, it’s important to always put your family first and that’s the decision I had to make.”

“A couple of months ago, my father was hospitalized and almost died. We’re all so grateful that he came out of it alive, but he still has a long road ahead of him. I had to make the difficult decision to put my full focus and energy on my family at this time. I hope you all can understand,” she continued.

Britney: Domination was set to debut February 13 at the Park Theater at Park MGM in Las Vegas. Spears was initially scheduled to perform various dates in March, May, July and August. Domination was to be her second residency on the Las Vegas Strip, as she previously headlined the wildly successful Britney: Piece of Me show at Planet Hollywood for four years.

With Domination now folded, questions remain whether the venue will fill Britney’s slot with a new residency. Park MGM recently launched Lady Gaga’s Enigma residency, which is one of the best-selling shows on the Strip, and will house Aerosmith‘s Deuces Are Wild show beginning in April.

Spears’ shocking hiatus news comes just days before the 20th anniversary of her debut album …Baby One More Time. Released on January 12, 1999, the LP smashed sales records and sent Spears’ career soaring. In the 20 years since the massive debut, she has recorded eight more albums, scored nine No. 1 singles and further cemented her status as the Princess of Pop.

Those who purchased all Britney Spears tickets will be issued refunds for the canceled shows.
