There has been equal hype and controversy surrounding Maroon 5’s Super Bowl halftime performance. Despite being a polarizing headliner, millions will be watching them take over the field of Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium on February 3. No one quite knows what the show will entail, but here’s five big things to look for.<\/p>\n

1. Career-Spanning Setlist<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Maroon 5’s catalog of hits dates back to their 2002 debut album Songs About Jane<\/em>. Although their sound has evolved over the years, the band have remained a staple on radio waves and music charts. Their halftime show should consist of a wide-range of hits to prove their longevity and place in pop\/rock music. An ideal setlist features early singles like “This Love” and “Makes Me Wonder” to recent hits like “Sugar,” “Girls Like You,” and “What Lovers Do.”<\/p>\n

2. Special Guests<\/strong><\/h5>\n

“Sicko Mode” rapper Travis Scott<\/a> and Atlanta native Big Boi are already confirmed as special guests. However, audiences should always expect the unexpected when it comes to Super Bowl halftime shows. Other artists who could potentially make an appearance include past collaborators like Christina Aguilera (“Moves Like Jagger”), Kendrick Lamar (“Don’t Wanna Know”) or SZA (“What Lovers Do”). Two collaborators who likely won’t show up are Rihanna and Cardi B. Both reportedly declined offers to headline halftime in support of Colin Kaepernick’s activism against police brutality and racial injustice. Which brings us to #3.<\/p>\n

3. A Statement Regarding The Controversy<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Maroon 5’s Super Bowl halftime show was not officially confirmed by the NFL until recently, but when reports first surfaced in the fall that they scored the headlining gig, public outcry ensued. Many stood by the belief that considered artists should support Kaepernick’s side in the Take a Knee movement, which the NFL has soundly opposed. Others argued that an Atlanta-based artist should be picked to celebrate the host city’s musical roots. Keyboardist PJ Morton defended<\/a> the band’s decision but it remains unknown if they, Travis Scott or Big Boi will make some sort of verbal or visual statement about the controversy. “Whatever we do, I’m going to stand behind [it] and be proud to be up there doing what I do,” Morton said.<\/p>\n

4. A Tour Announcement<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Halftime show performers have typically used their multi-million audience to build up to a massive tour announcement. Maroon 5 set out on their Red Pill Blues tour<\/a> last summer, making a new tour announcement less likely. However, it’s always possible that they have something new up their sleeve to surprise fans with.
