Believe it or not, the holiday season is now upon us. It not only brings joy, but also a high demand for tickets to some of Broadway’s top productions. If you’re looking to give the gift of theater this year, expect Broadway ticket prices to be steeper. Costs tend to jump while in the thick of November and December festivities.<\/p>\n

Thanksgiving on the Great White Way typically equals a chaotic – and even record-setting<\/a> – frenzy at the box office as millions flock to the Big Apple for the long holiday weekend. But you can’t expect a boost in overall theater sales, without a spike in ticket prices.<\/p>\n

According to Ticket Club data, Broadway’s best-selling shows can jump in price anywhere from 15 to 40 percent. Average Thanksgiving-week ticket prices are much higher than the previous week. Wicked<\/em><\/a> saw the largest holiday impact of the strongest-selling shows. Its five-year average price for tickets the week before Thanksgiving capped at $138. Days later, that figure spiked to $190 – a 38 percent increase in price.<\/p>\n

Dear Evan Hansen<\/em><\/a> saw a modest eight percent increase from its past two seasons on Broadway. It is the main anomoly with a 21 percent decline after Turkey Day. However, those numbers were evidently affected by the departure<\/a> of original leading man Ben Platt in 2017. The Tony-winning star left the production just days before the holiday, causing ticket prices to skyrocket during his final shows before falling drastically afterwards. The Phantom of the Opera<\/em><\/a>, Aladdin<\/em><\/a>, The Lion King<\/em><\/a> and The Book of Mormon<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>all saw price spikes between 15 and 30 percent.<\/p>\n

Unsurprisingly,\u00a0Hamilton<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>draws in even bigger bucks throughout the holiday season. The weeks of Thanksgiving and Christmas conjure average tickets around $600 apiece. Meanwhile, they sold for roughly $80 less the week prior.<\/p>\n

After the lucrative Thanksgiving weekend, most Broadway ticket prices fall. However, there is not a huge drop-off considering the busy holiday season is in full swing. The trend ultimately repeats itself a month later come Christmas.<\/p>\n

And while Broadway ticket prices go through roller coaster highs and lows during the holidays, another New York theater tradition isn’t as unpredictable. The Radio City Christmas Spectacular<\/a>, now celebrating its 85th year, sees average prices on the rise with each passing week. Ticket Club data found that over the last five years, the Rockettes’ flagship show had average ticket prices jump 16 percent from its first week of performances (typically in the second week of November) to the week of Thanksgiving.
