The Tony winner announced he&#8217;ll star in the title role when the musical heads to his native Puerto Rico in 2019.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The groundbreaking production will take over San Juan&#8217;s Teatro UPR for a three-week run in January 2019. It will mark Miranda&#8217;s first performance as the founding father in nearly three years following his July 2016 departure from the Broadway cast, however, he maintains the idea had been planted in his head long before.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Bringing Hamilton: An American Musical to Puerto Rico is a dream that I&#8217;ve had since we first opened at The Public Theater in 2015,&#8221; he said in a statement. Miranda cites the destruction of the island from Hurricane Maria as his final motivation to do just that. &#8220;A few weeks before Hurricane Maria, I had made a commitment to not only bring the show to Puerto Rico, but also return again to the title role. In the aftermath of Maria, we decided to expedite the announcement of the project to send a bold message that Puerto Rico will recover and be back in business, stronger than ever.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Broadway veteran has always spoke candidly and advocated for diversifying the arts, with <em>Hamilton<\/em> serving as a major breakthrough on Broadway not only for its modern hip-hop inspired score, but its acclaimed cultural cast.<\/p>\n<p>He has also been vocal about hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico, and helped raise millions of dollars for the island through the Hispanic Federation and the benefit single &#8220;Almost Like Praying,&#8221; which features fellow Latin superstars <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ticketclub.com\/concerts\/jennifer-lopez-tickets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jennifer Lopez<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ticketclub.com\/concerts\/marc-anthony-tickets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marc Anthony<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ticketclub.com\/concerts\/camila-cabello-tickets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Camila Cabello<\/a>, Luis Fonsi and Gloria Estafan.<\/p>\n<p>Ticket information for Hamilton&#8217;s Puerto Rican run will be announced at a later date. The musical resides on Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, as well as the CIBC Theatre in Chicago. A North American tour is expected to launch next year for the smash hit.
