Blissful Love Songs

“Perfect” – Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran is no stranger to swoon-worthy love songs (i.e. “Thinking Out Loud,” “Photograph,” “Kiss Me,” etc.). However, it’s his latest single that lands on our Valentine’s Day playlist for effortlessly capturing the simple beauty of a love. Even more “perfect?” Sheeran penned the dreamy hit for fianceé Cherry Seaborn. Standout lyric: “Now I know I have met an angel in person and she looks perfect tonight.”

“All of Me” – John Legend

John Legend’s smooth voice coupled with delicate piano accompaniment only enhances the beautiful storytelling of “All of Me.” This song has been a staple at wedding’s since its release five years ago, and will likely stay that way for years to come. Standout lyric: “You’re my end and my beginning / even when I lose I’m winning.”

“Just the Way You Are” – Bruno Mars

Hearts all over the world melted when this mega hit first hit radio waves. Bruno Mars celebrates everything his partner has to offer, even if she can’t see it for herself. Standout lyric: “You know I’d never ask you to change / if perfect’s what you’re searching for then just stay the same.”

Friend Zone Anthems

“Marry Me” – Thomas Rhett

Don’t let the name fool you. Though Thomas Rhett‘s “Marry Me” first appears to be a romantic ballad, the deceptive lyrics tell a story of a girl who dreams of getting married, just not to the boy who’s been by her side forever. It’s poignant yet heartbreaking, particularly for those similarly stuck in the dreaded friend zone. Standout lyric: “And I’d always wondered if she felt the same way / when I got the invite I knew it was too late.”

“Not In That Way” – Sam Smith

Sam Smith packs an emotional punch all through “Not In That Way” off his 2014 debut album In the Lonely Hour. He soulfully croons lyrics of pining for someone despite knowing they won’t reciprocate the feelings. Standout lyric: “You will never know that feeling / you will never see through these eyes.”

“Keep Me In Mind” – Zac Brown Band

Zac Brown Band takes a more upbeat and optimistic approach to unrequited love in “Keep Me In Mind.” Brown stays confident that one day things may go in his favor, and he’s willing to wait as long as it takes for that to happen. Standout lyric: “Keep me in mind and I pray someday that you will love me only.”

Songs For the Unapologetically Single

“So What” – P!nk

P!nk shrugs off heartbreak with a rock star attitude that only P!nk is capable of. “So What” is not only a great kiss-off anthem, but an all-around fun hit that will get the singles-only party started. Standout lyrics: “I don’t need you and guess what / I’m having more fun and now that we’re done I’m going to show you tonight I’m alright.”

“Confident” – Demi Lovato

Self-empowerment is at the forefront of Demi Lovato‘s “Confident.” Put it on blast, strut your stuff, and love every minute of it. Standout lyric: “What’s wrong with being confident?”

“Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)” – Beyoncé

Did you really think this list would be complete without “Single Ladies?” Alas, here it is. Standout lyric: “You had your turn and now you’re gonna learn / what it really feels like to miss me.”

Songs For the Optimistically Hopeful

“I Could Use a Love Song” – Maren Morris

Despite being put through the emotional ringer, Maren Morris remains hopeful for something great to come in this No. 1 hit. All it takes is one good ol’ fashioned love song to restore her faith in the idea of love. Standout lyric: “But I haven’t lost all hope yet / yeah it’s hurting but it ain’t dead.”

“Haven’t Met You Yet” – Michael Bublé

No one masters the hold-your-head-up concept quite like Michael Bublé in the cheerful “Haven’t Met You Yet.” The crooner has painted the perfect picture in his head of a great love but just has to wait for the right person to come along. Standout lyric: “I might have to wait / I’ll never give up / I guess it’s half timing and the other half’s luck.”

“Something Like Olivia” – John Mayer

The titular Olivia is quite an elusive character, but John Mayer is determined to find his own version of her. While it’s not exactly about unrequited love, “Something Like Olivia” celebrates the belief that happiness can be found even when you think it’s out of reach. Standout lyric: “Olivia is taken but a look like hers can be found from time to time / I’m thinking something like Olivia is what I need to find.”

Songs for the Breakup Bound

“Someone Like You” – Adele

Is there any one who knows how to tug at the heartstrings like Adele? The songstress packs her most powerful punch with “Someone Like You,” the heartbreaking ballad that features soaring vocals and a painful parting message. Standout lyric: “Regrets and mistakes, they’re memories made / who would have known how bittersweet this would taste.”

“Cry Me a River” – Justin Timberlake

One of Justin Timberlake‘s earliest hits is also among his most beloved – and one of the most notorious modern breakup songs. It takes a more bitter approach to the breakup versus a melancholy one, but is sure to resonate with plenty of people regardless. Standout lyric: “The bridges were burned / now it’s your turn to cry / cry me a river.”

“We Don’t Talk Anymore” – Charlie Puth ft. Selena Gomez

Regrets over a breakup and unresolved feelings are at the forefront of this Charlie Puth & Selena Gomez duet. The pair pine over each other despite appearing to move on, which results in them being even unhappier because, well, they don’t talk anymore.  Standout lyric: “We don’t talk anymore like we used to / We don’t laugh anymore / What was all of it for?”
