Elton John-Composed The Devil Wears Prada Musical to Debut in Chicago Next Year

The forthcoming The Devil Wears Prada musical now has one more major plan solidified: its anticipated premiere date.

The new stage production will have its world debut on July 14, 2020 at Chicago’s Nederlander Theatre. It is expected to have a short run in the Windy City and wrap performances on August 16 before transitioning to Broadway. However, official Broadway performance dates and casting information remain unknown.

The Devil Wears Prada musical first came into early developments in 2015 by famed theater producer Kevin McCollum. It picked up speed last summer when Elton John signed on as composer amidst his three-year farewell tour. Lyricist Shaina Taub entered production alongside the Rocket Man, while Tony-winning director Anna D. Shapiro joined the project earlier this year. Rounding out the preliminary creative team is musical supervisor Nadia DiGiallonardo and writer Paul Rudnick.

Casting selections remain unknown at this time. However, industry elite got a first taste of the show at a New York reading in July. According to Playbill, Tony Award nominee Emily Skinner read for the part of devilishly cutthroat fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly, portrayed by Meryl Streep in the 2006 film. Krystina Alabado (Broadway’s Mean Girls) filled Anne Hathaway’s original shoes as Andy Sachs, an aspiring journalist-turned-hapless assistant to Priestly.

Stage veterans Helene York, Mario Cantone, Etai Benson, Jo Lampert and Nicholas Christopher also took part in the reading. They took on main supporting roles originally played by Emily Blunt, Stanley Tucci, Adrian Grenier, Tracie Thoms and Simon Baker, respectively.

The Devil Wears Prada film was a box office smash that grossed over $300 million. Is the musical adaptation bound for equal success? For now, we’ll have to wait until summer 2020 to find out.
