The Kentucky Derby is right around the corner and tickets to see one of the world’s most famed horse races are in high demand. Fans hoping to snag Kentucky Derby tickets at the last minute can expect to pay more than in previous years for a seat at Churchill Downs.
Ticket Club data shows that on average, spectators dished out $470 per ticket this year, the highest ticket cost of the past five years. Given that the race is known for its long-standing traditions rooted in high-status and elegance, coupled with the fact that it kicks off horse racing’s Triple Crown, a higher cost of entry is expected annually. However, 2018 Kentucky Derby tickets in particular prove rather appealing to high-rollers.
This year’s average ticket price of nearly $500 marks a 28 percent increase from average $367 patrons dished out last year per ticket. A staggering 43 percent price jump differentiates this year’s race from the 2014 Derby, which saw a low average ticket price of $328. But what exactly is causing the major price increase year over year? It’s hard to pinpoint an exact reason, but an increase in prize money could be a factor, as the overall purse for the race is now $2 million, with the winner pocketing roughly $1.24 million alone. In addition, as the Run for the Roses approaches its milestone 150th year (2018 marks the 144th race), an upward trend in ticket prices could become the norm.
As prices stand right now, the cheapest entry to the track as general admission will run buyers $114, including all fees. The highest priced ticket comes for a seat within the elite Trophy Room area for a whopping $6,242. The cost of tickets, coupled with the obligatory wager on a horse and signature mint julep, might make for an expensive experience, but an unforgettable one at that.
