Music fans won’t want to miss this one. The Coachella 2019 lineup has been announced and features Ariana Grande, Childish Gambino and Tame Impala in the coveted headlining slots.
Childish Gambino will cover the Friday night gigs of the two-weekend festival. Although he had been rumored to serve as headliner for some time, the official confirmation is a sweet surprise for fans. Following the release of his Grammy-winning album Awaken, My Love!, Donald Glover revealed he’d be retiring his Childish Gambino stage name and embark on one final tour (the wildly successful This Is America trek). It’s unclear if his performances at Coachella will be the last of Childish Gambino, but if so, what a way to end an era.
Aussie rockers Tame Impala fill the Saturday headlining slot. The band – fronted by Kevin Parker – first played Coachella in 2015. That same year they released their latest album Currents, leading many to believe that a new record is in the cards this year, presumably before their April 13 appearance in Indio, California. The news comes after they scored a headlining gig at Desert Daze Festival in October, which was cut short due to inclement weather.
Ariana Grande will close out the festival as Sunday’s headliner. This news only builds on the monumental success she’s seen over the past few months thanks to her latest album Sweetener, smash single “Thank U, Next,” and her constant presence in headlines regarding her personal life. She will visit Coachella in the midst of her Sweetener World Tour, which will hit nearly 50 cities across North America with international dates expected to follow.
Grande is only the fourth female solo headliner to grace the stage in Coachella’s 20 year-run, following Bjork, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé. At 25, she is also the youngest headliner in the festival’s history. Grande certainly fits Coachella’s bill of needing a pop star with enough clout to carry the day’s performances and seems to be the only candidate who could follow Beyoncé’s showstopping performance in 2018.
While #Beychella won’t be repeated in 2019, festival-goers will get to see another Knowles take the stage. Solange is among the dozens of other performers, joining Khalid, Kid Cudi, Janelle Monáe, Bad Bunny, Zedd, Weezer, DJ Snake and several more.
The annual festival will run from April 12-14 and April 19-21. Tickets are good for entry for a full weekend. Find three-day passes for both weekends here.
