James Taylor has a busy year ahead. The singer-songwriter revealed that his new album American Standard will drop next month, backed behind a sizable U.S. tour this summer.
Taylor will launch the trek May 15 in New Orleans and visit over two dozens markets before wrapping in Camden, New Jersey on July 10. The itinerary will bring Taylor to arenas and amphitheaters in Detroit, Nashville, San Diego, Houston, Chicago and more. He also has a special stadium gig booked at Fenway Park in June. Special guest Jackson Browne will join Taylor in support.
Fans will be treated to a new record in time for the excursion as Taylor confirmed his 20th studio album, American Standard, will be released February 28. As the name implies, the LP is comprised of Taylor’s interpretations of several Great American Songbook classics.
“I’ve always had songs I grew up with that I remember really well, that were part of the family record collection – and I had a sense of how to approach, so it was a natural to put American Standard together,” he said in a statement. “In terms of how they were performed and recorded before, we paid attention to the chords and melody, but we were interested in doing something new, and bringing something new to it, we’ve reinterpreted the songs, that’s what makes it worth doing.”
The tracklist features timeless hits like “Moon River,” “Pennies From Heaven” and “Ol’ Man River.” Taylor will also try his hand at some Rodgers & Hammerstein classics, particularly “You’ve Got to Be Carefully Tonight” and “The Surrey With the Fringe On Top.”
Prior to his summer U.S. run, the Grammy winner will embark on a 12-date tour of Canada alongside his All-Star Band and longtime collaborator Bonnie Raitt.
