The Globetrotters are known for their unique fusion of comedy and basketball, but they have a rich, storied history with the game that may surprise some. Check out these facts you may not have known about the world renowned team.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The team originated in Chicago in 1926, not Harlem.<\/li>\n<li>When then-manager Abe Saperstein took charge in the late 1920s, the team was known as the New York Harlem Globe Trotters, but primarily toured the Midwestern states of Iowa and Illinois.<\/li>\n<li>The Globe Trotters did not play a single game in Harlem until 1968.<\/li>\n<li>Prior to the creation of the NBA, the Globetrotters were among the best teams in the country, winning the World Professional Basketball Tournament in 1940.<\/li>\n<li>They have set a total of 12 world records for basketball.<\/li>\n<li>Seven of those records were set in a single day in 2015.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Harlem Globetrotters set seven Guinness World Records\u00ae records\" width=\"685\" height=\"385\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zJmvBM18SiU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harlemglobetrotters.com\/about\/our-story\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previous record<\/a> was set in 2000, when Michael &#8220;Wild Thing&#8221; Wilson slam dunked on a 12 foot high hoop.<\/li>\n<li>The Globetrotters were inducted into the Naismaith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002.<\/li>\n<li>Former player Mannie Jackson became the first African-American to own an international sports and entertainment organization when he purchased the team in 1993.<\/li>\n<li>The team has performed in front of the Pope (in 2015, when Pope Francis was named an honorary member).<\/li>\n<li>Other honorary team members include Whoopi Goldberg, Jesse Jackson, Bob Hope, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Nelson Mandela, Robin Roberts, and Pope John Paul II.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2413\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2413\" style=\"width: 586px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2413\" src=\"https:\/\/ticketclubsite.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/10\/globetrotters.jpg\" alt=\"APTOPIX Vatican Harlem Globetrotters\" width=\"586\" height=\"439\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2413\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Pope Francis was named an honorary Globetrotter in 2015.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>The Globetrotters were the first team to play basketball in Europe.<\/li>\n<li>A number of Globetrotters have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harlemglobetrotters.com\/about\/legends\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gone on to become NBA legends<\/a>, including Wilt Chamberlain, Connie Hawkins, Nat Clifton and Marques Haynes.<\/li>\n<li>The team signed its first female player in 1985 when Olympic gold medalist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harlemglobetrotters.com\/about\/legends\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lynette Woodard<\/a> joined the squad for two years.<\/li>\n<li>After Woodard, the roster went on to feature 12 more women.<\/li>\n<li>By 2006, the Globetrotters had won 22,000 games.<\/li>\n<li>They have a current winning percentage of .985.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Be sure to check out the Harlem Globetrotters on their upcoming tour, which consists of over 70 dates.
